Visibuilt Rolls Out Nature Friendly Asphalt

The road ahead looks promising for a Danish climate tech startup redefining highway construction by replacing fossil fuel based bitumen with low-carbon, nature-based alternatives derived from fungal mycelium.

Founded by biotechnologist Line Kloster Pedersen alongside Chief Scientific Officer Oleksii Rebrov, Visibuilt bridges biological engineering with heavy material science. Rebrov completed a PhD in Physics with Stockholm University before embarking on his startup journey. Their collective vision targets a key challenge in transport decarbonisation. Whilst vehicles are rapidly electrifying, roading will continue to be critical infrastructure well into the future. But the materials used in road construction remain bound to high pollutant, high emission petroleum products. Visibuilt’s flagship technology visiBINDER, harnesses fungal bioprocessing to bind naturally occurring aggregate materials such as shingle, significantly lowering the carbon footprint of asphalt manufacturing and paving.

Visibuilt technology has been validated through a number of high-profile research partnerships. The company collaborated with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and asphalt manufacturer Munck Asfalt on the LOOPER initiative. Backed by over 13 million DKK from Denmark’s Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), the project subjected bio-binder formulations to rigorous real-world mechanical testing. Visibuilt’s core biological concept has also been highlighted in science journal Nature Biotechnology. The company matured its early lab scale-ups with non-dilutive grant support and incubation from the BioInnovation Institute (BII), the Danish biotech cluster initiative backed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

The award winning company is headquartered at Søborg, near Copenhagen within Alfa Laval Innovation House, a corporate incubator and co-working space established by industrial engineering giant Alfa Laval in 2019. With plans afoot to transition from lab trial to industrial-scale production and further expand the technical team, Visibuilt closed a €3.34 million seed funding round in July 2026. The round was co-led by EIFO (Export and Investment Fund of Denmark) and European impact investor Unconventional Ventures, with participation from Proptechfonden and returning backer EMDFonden.
